     ka-lai chan





Ka-Lai Chan is a young designer and a fresh graduate as of this year 2009, from the School of Arts in Utrecht, Netherlands. In the same year of graduating, wasting no time at all, she started her own studio to give her the space and freedom to work as she pleases.

Ka-Lai was born on 7 January 1985 in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Her roots are from China. In her youth she found it difficult to show her real personality and hided it from other people. But in her designs she dared to stand out and to be different. At the Academy she slowly accepted herself for being who she is and she loved to design, because it felt like she can be herself. She liked how people react on her designs and it felt good to open up to people by her creations.
In her designs she uses her own experiences, emotions, fascinations and perceptions as inspiration.
 
"In my designs I try to astonish and surprise people. Why is everything as it?
And everybody takes it as it is. Everything could be different. Nothing is as it should be. Within my designs I try to create forms and products that are not too obvious. I play and experiment with material and shapes. That's how unique and creative products are brought to daylight."
